They fought for our freedom, now they have returned to Pilsen as honored guests
Two American veterans of World War II became the most precious guests of the Liberation Festival this year. One hundred-year-old Joseph Thurmond and one year older Gideon Kantor made the long journey across the ocean to return after decades to the places where they participated in the liberation of Western Bohemia. Visitors to the celebrations could meet them at the opening of the celebrations and during the traditional Freedom Convoy, when both drove along Klatovská třída in historic jeeps to the enthusiastic response of thousands of people.
According to Mayor Roman Zarzycký, the participation of both veterans is an extraordinary event. He appreciated not only their willingness to complete the demanding journey, but also their modesty and gratitude for being welcomed in Pilsen. People will have the opportunity to meet both men also at a memorial service at the Thank You, America! monument, where they will deliver their greetings on Wednesday, May 6.
Joseph Thurmond, a former member of the 94th Infantry Division, recalled his service in Czechoslovakia shortly after the end of the war, when he provided, for example, ammunition disposal, guard duty and escorting prisoners. This year he returned to the region for the first time since 1945 and his journey also leads through places where he served at the time, such as Klatovy or Střelské Hoštice. “I have fond memories of the time when I was in what was then Czechoslovakia,” he said, adding that the locals received him with great kindness. Gideon Kantor, who served with the 4th Armored Division, brings back strong emotions from Pilsen. He recalled not only the joy of returning, but also the profound importance of the fight for freedom and democracy in Europe. During the war, he participated in supplying tank units and his unit, among other things, participated in the advance through France and Germany to the liberation of the Ohrdruf concentration camp. He came to the United States as a Jewish refugee after his family fled Nazi-occupied Austria.
Both veterans agree that returning to Pilsen is a powerful personal experience for them. At the same time, their presence reminds them of the crucial role of the American army in the liberation of Western Bohemia and the importance of preserving historical memory for future generations. Joseph Thurmond's journey through the Czech Republic is organized and financed by Jan Horsky.
