Eighty-four years ago, 262 family members and associates of Czechoslovak paratroopers—who had been arrested following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich—were executed at the Mauthausen concentration camp.
They were aides and relatives of paratroopers from the Anthropoid, Silver A, Bivouac, Out Distance, Steel, and Intransitive parachute groups.
They were sentenced to death by a military tribunal of the Prague Gestapo on September 29 and October 5, 1942. On October 23, 1942, they were transported from the Small Fortress in Terezín to Mauthausen to be executed.
In Mauthausen, they were murdered with a shot to the back of the head—one by one, they were led into a room for a purported medical examination. In the room, they were forced to stand with their backs to a wall marked with a height gauge. They were then shot in the back of the head through a hidden opening in the wall. According to the Mauthausen records of those executed and the death certificates issued, they were murdered at two-minute intervals over the course of nearly nine hours. The bodies were cremated, and the ashes were dumped in a garbage dump behind the camp.
Another group of 31 collaborators with the paratroopers was executed at Mauthausen on January 26, 1943, and the last one, František Pecháček, on February 3, 1944.
In total, 294 people were executed, 150 of whom were women.
Among them were the families of Pilsen patriots and the families of Pilsen resistance fighters—the Bejbl, Hrdlička, Král, and Kučera—who supported members of the paratrooper groups ANTHROPOID, OUT DISTANCE, SILVER A, and STEEL.
