Happy 105th Birhtday in heaven to Robet A. Muthersbaugh, hero and liberator of Pilsen and southwestern Bohemia, member of the 16th Armored Division.
He passed away three years ago. May his memory be honored!
Robert Muthersbaugh was 23 years old at the end of the war. As a radio operator in the command company of the 16th Armored Division, he was in one of the first military vehicles to enter Plzeň as part of General George Patton’s Third Army. During the war, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal “for courage and heroism.”
Robert A. Muthersbaugh recalls:
We arrived at the port of Le Havre in France on February 19, 1945. We quickly moved on to Reims and Verdun, and then to an area near Mainz in Germany. We then advanced toward Nuremberg, where we were supported by the 80th Infantry Division. We continued on through Rozvadov, Tachov, Stříbro, and Bor to Pilsen. We entered Pilsen on May 6, 1945, around 8:00 a.m. I believe our armored vehicle was one of the first to reach Pilsen. We remained there until September 1945.
In 2015, Martin Řezníček, an American correspondent for Czech Television (ČT), filmed Robert A. Muthersbaugh.
