Camps in the park behind the SC Plaza will revive the heroism of our soldiers
The park behind the Plaza Plzeň Shopping Center will be transformed into a large military camp during this year's Liberation Festival, which will open the door to the daily life of the liberators for visitors. From Friday, May 1st to Sunday, May 3rd, military history clubs will set up authentic historical camps here, which will commemorate not only the technology and armament, but above all the fates of Czechoslovak soldiers fighting on the Western Front.
The main part of the exhibition is the camp of the Czechoslovak Independent Armored Brigade under the auspices of the Historical and Military Technology Club of the Czech Armed Forces. In the park, visitors will learn about the eventful history of the unit, which, after the long siege of the port of Dunkirk, sent a symbolic Combined Detachment of 140 men to participate in the liberation of its native land. The entire brigade then set off for its free homeland after the surrender of the German garrison in mid-May. The camp will feature British period equipment, field workshops, a military infirmary and a period kitchen. The atmosphere will be completed by regular demonstrations of shooting, training and guided tours. For the youngest visitors, there is a special training course for recruits with a reward and a children's course, while adults will be interested in a display of period civilian and military clothing, which will bring life in the protectorate closer.
In the immediate vicinity there will be a camp dedicated to the British Royal Air Force (RAF). The dominant feature of this area will be a faithful replica of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft on a 1:1 scale, which will be brought by the Czech Spitfire Club in the markings of the 312th Czechoslovak Squadron and the legendary pilot Otto Smik. In addition to the iconic aircraft, you will take a look behind the scenes of wartime airfields and learn about the lesser-known but key role of women's auxiliary corps. The program will offer a combination of educational exhibitions and dynamic demonstrations that faithfully illustrate the tension and everyday life of airmen in exile.
You can visit the military camps in the park behind the Plaza on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the program will end on Sunday between 1 and 6 p.m. Come and remember the heroism of our soldiers and enjoy the unique period atmosphere in the middle of Pilsen.
